Becoming the Answer to Our Prayers

Too often believers waffle between one of two extremes: either we charge out to solve the world鈥檚 problems in own strength and eventually burn out, or we fervently pray for God to do something about all those troubles 鈥渙ut there鈥 while we enjoy another latte on the couch.

In their new book, Becoming the Answer to Our Prayers, activists Shane Claiborne and Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove show us that prayer and action are inextricably tied鈥-you can鈥檛 have one without the other.

Through the exposition of key Bible passages they provide concrete examples of how a life of prayer fuels social engagement as well as the work of justice. Biblical phrases such as 鈥済ive us this day our daily bread鈥 and 鈥渇orgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors鈥 take on new meaning when applied to feeding the hungry or advocating for international debt relief.

If you hope to see God change society, become an ordinary radical who prays鈥-and then is ready to become the answer to your own prayers.

鈥淲hen we pray to God asking, 鈥淲hy don鈥檛 you do something?鈥 we hear a gentle whisper respond, 鈥淚 did do something. I made you.鈥 Prayer is important. Just as important is the call to become the answer to our prayers.鈥
