The Best Story of All

What makes a good story?

Author and 果冻视频 alumna Yangsze Choo clearly knows. Her first book, a novel called about the Chinese world of the dead, has generated quite a bit of praise. Oprah.com picked it as a 鈥溾濃攊n other words, a book they 鈥渃ouldn鈥檛 stop reading.鈥 And USA Today called it a 鈥.鈥

Yangsze鈥檚 inspiration for the story came from several different places. One is her own ethnic heritage. A fourth-generation Malaysian of Chinese descent, she grew up reading Chinese fantasy stories that contained ghosts and magic and elaborate depictions of the afterlife.

But she also had C. S. Lewis鈥檚 The Great Divorce and its portrayal of heaven and hell in mind as she wrote. The idea of 鈥減arallel worlds鈥濃攚orlds that exist alongside ours鈥攑ut forth by Lewis and by classical Chinese literature plays a central role in The Ghost Bride.

Admittedly, however, Yangsze said most of the novel came from her own imagination, sparked by a mention of 鈥渟pirit marriages鈥 (a marriage between a living person and a dead person) that she read while doing research on another project.

Indeed, there is little connection between the life of the novel鈥檚 protagonist, Li Lan鈥攁 poor seventeen-year-old girl living in nineteenth-century Malaya who receives an unusual marriage proposal鈥攁nd Yangsze鈥檚 present reality as a writer and stay-at-home mom of two. But her own life contains stories that, if not quite so fantastical, are just as interesting and poignant as the one she weaves in The Ghost Bride.

Adjusting to a New Culture

Coming to the United States for the first time to attend Harvard University is one of those intriguing stories. 鈥淚 had never seen the campus before I arrived with my two suitcases,鈥 she said. 鈥淎 lot of international students do this. Everyone else had their family that first day, and I felt very lonely.鈥

In addition to the adjustment to college life, though, she faced the adjustment to a whole new culture鈥攐ne unlike the many places she鈥檇 lived in growing up, such as Malaysia, Germany, and Japan. 鈥淐oming to the U.S. felt very strange to me,鈥 Yangsze recalled. 鈥淓verything felt like it came right out of a movie鈥攙ery iconic. . . . And Americans have so many consumer products; it was mind-boggling!鈥 Thankfully, she found support and community from many other international students going through the same experience.

Meeting Jesus on Campus

She also discovered who Jesus is at college鈥攁nother beautiful story from her life. 鈥淚 did not grow up in a Christian household,鈥 she recounted. 鈥淏ut I always felt since I was a child that there was some sort of presence of God in my life. I wasn鈥檛 sure who he was or which god he was, but it was a very kind and comforting presence.鈥

When Yangsze arrived at Harvard, her curiosity about God led her to attend several different Bible studies, and to eventually get involved in 果冻视频 at the invitation of a friend in her dorm. 鈥淚 . . . started asking him a lot of questions, like 鈥榃hy do you believe?鈥 and 鈥楬ow do you know this is true?鈥欌 Yangsze said. He didn鈥檛 have all the answers but suggested that others in 果冻视频 might.

It was in the safety of the 果冻视频 community that Yangsze came to understand who God is and surrendered her life to him. It was also a place where she developed significant relationships. 鈥淚鈥檓 still very good friends with many people [from 果冻视频],鈥 she said, 鈥渆ven many years later.鈥 And in fact, the friend who first invited her became her husband! She added, 鈥淭he gift of 果冻视频 was that it drew people together from many different areas. That was a real blessing to me.鈥

She was also blessed by the constant space she had to ask questions during college. From fellow students to churchgoers, she talked to as many people as she could. 鈥淎 wonderful thing about college is you can ask as many questions as you want, because it鈥檚 expected of you,鈥 Yangsze reflected. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 realize what a luxury this was until later in life. . . . God allowed me to run into many thoughtful, interesting people to answer my questions, and that was a great provision.鈥

Facing Limits

Some questions, however, can鈥檛 be answered. And sometimes those questions create the most powerful鈥攁lbeit painful鈥攕tories in our lives.

After several years in corporate jobs and at a startup post-college, Yangsze was forced to quit working due to a herniated disk. 鈥淚t was difficult to transition from the corporate world,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 realized that there are limitations to the body鈥攊t won鈥檛 just fix itself. Coming face to face with that early on was hard.鈥 She turned to God in prayer constantly.

Looking back now, she sees how formative that experience鈥攁nd other painful points鈥攈ave been in helping her learn to be honest with God. 鈥淚t was difficult to say things to God like 鈥業 am angry鈥 or 鈥業 am disappointed,鈥欌 she said, 鈥渂ut I realized it was better to tell him, because when you stop telling him the truth you start to lose your relationship with him. I鈥檝e received a lot of peace from that鈥斺榯he peace that surpasses understanding.鈥欌

Connecting with Others

Becoming a published author has been its own mini story in her life鈥攐ne that鈥檚 still unfolding as she juggles book signings and publicity appearances with her already full home life. But Yangsze has been grateful for the new adventure so far and the opportunities it鈥檚 given her to meet new people. 鈥淚鈥檝e really enjoyed doing book events,鈥 she said.

Her hope has been that people will enjoy the book but also find it thought-provoking鈥攁nd so far, that seems to be the case. 鈥淧eople don鈥檛 really talk about what happens after you die in Western culture. Or what you hope for and fear,鈥 Yangsze said. 鈥淚鈥檝e had some great, interesting conversations with people.鈥

Walking with God

Ultimately, though, it鈥檚 the story of God鈥檚 love and faithfulness that is most powerful for Yangsze. That鈥檚 the Story that runs through every piece of her life. 鈥淢y faith has been the backbone of everything, the thing that sustains me,鈥 she said.

And while passion and fantasy make for great novels, Yangsze has learned that it鈥檚 often in the ordinary, everyday decisions that great stories are written. 鈥淲hen you are young, you want faith to be a big dramatic gesture,鈥 she reflected. 鈥淏ut God is with us in all the mundane, routine moments, too. Life is a series of small, rather mundane things, and yet it鈥檚 very beautiful to have God with you all the way.鈥

That story is one this author will never stop telling.
