At the end of the meal, I casually inquired about any good books he had read lately. Without hesitation, he recommended i>Heroic Leadership by Chris Lowney. Little did I realize at the time just what a fortuitous piece of advice this would be.

Lowney’s book recounts the history of the early Jesuits. Inauspiciously founded in 1540 by ten college students in Paris, the Society of Jesus grew to become not only the largest religious order in the world, but the largest higher-education network as well.

Traits
Lowney describes four traits that set the Jesuits apart.

1. Self-Awareness
The order’s first “general,” Ignatius Loyola, required each recruit to spend 30 days engaged in “spiritual exercises.” This entailed solitude, Scripture reading, and critical self-reflection. Each day was arranged around four one-hour mediations. In subsequent years, Jesuits examined themselves twice daily and set aside one week per year for deeper reflection.

By being so intentional about matters such as repentance, self-assessment, and personal accountability, early Jesuits were shaped to be both contemplative and activistic.

2. Ingenuity
Jesuit training was designed to facilitate adaptability, imagination, and flexibility. Loyola described the ideal Jesuit as “living with one foot raised.” By this phrase, he expressed a strong action bias. To set this process in motion, fresh recruits — after completing the spiritual exercises — were sent on month-long pilgrimages without funds, food, or lodging.

After his initial training was completed, Jesuit Christopher Clavius felt called to become a professor of astronomy and mathematics. In this role at a leading university for 48 years, he trained two generations of Europe’s elite scientists. It is estimated that the Jesuits educated 20% of all university students in Europe at that time.

Among Clavius’ students was Matteo Ricci. Ricci would spend the bulk of his life as a missionary to China, becoming a Confucian scholar who dressed in traditional Mandarin garb. Honored as the first Westerner to be buried within the imperial walls at his death in 1610, he personally led 2,500 Chinese into the Christian faith.

3. Love
Jesuits were also trained to love each other and those they served. As the first missionary to Japan in 1549, Francis Xavier drew energy from mere scraps of paper that bore the signatures of his nine fellow Jesuits in Paris. Within a century, nearly half a million Japanese had converted.

The Jesuits were truly a multiethnic community. While all other religious orders rejected converted Jews – labeling them marrano (swine) – the Jesuits welcomed them with open arms. Hence, it is no surprise that Loyola’s successor, Diego Lainez, was a Jewish Christian.

Love for the disenfranchised was also central to the Jesuit vision. As portrayed in the movie, i>The Mission, Jesuits established native settlements in South America and fought injustice. As a result of their stand against slavery, they suffered severe persecution.

4. Heroism
Finally, each Jesuit was encouraged to lead “an uninterrupted life of heroic deeds and heroic virtues.” Their Latin word motto – magis – simply means more. Believing that God had called upon them to accomplish great things for Him, they were the first Europeans to visit Tibet, boat down the Blue Nile, and explore the head waters of the Mississippi River.

It was in this spirit that Alexandre de Rhodes went to Vietnam in 1627. Within 30 years, he witnessed over 300,000 new believers. The call to do more likewise led Roberto de Nobili, a noble’s son, to serve as a missionary to India. Eventually, he wrote twenty books in Sanskrit. Fifty years after his death in 1656, some 200,000 Indians had joined the faith.

Lessons for Us
As Ƶ staff, what can we learn from the early Jesuits? How might these four traits impact our ministry on American campuses today?

First, each of us must develop regular time and space for reflection. Too often, we head off to “do ministry” without engaging intimately with the Lord. At our own peril do we ignore His invitation to come and dine. Daily quiet times and periodic extended blocks of reflection and prayer are essential. As I travel, I am encouraged by the growing hunger I see – from Southern California to New England – for a deeper spiritual walk.

Second, we must always be reinventing the way we do ministry. The enemy of ingenuity is not stupidity but tradition. An evangelistic method that worked five years ago may not be as appropriate now. A group of students that we didn’t notice two years ago now may loom large on our screens. While truth remains constant, we must conscientiously adapt our methodology to reach this generation of students and faculty.

Third, we are called to care for and support one another. Since Ƶ’s purpose is to “establish and advance witnessing communities,” we must not walk alone. Like Xavier, we should feel supported even if we are not in geographical proximity with each other. This love should then extend to the diverse communities of students, faculty, and campuses we serve.

Finally, as we contemplate the early Jesuits’ heroic deeds, let us be inspired to fulfill God’s mission in the communities where we serve. Currently, the Fellowship has staff on only about one-quarter of American campuses, and we are reaching only a fraction of the 17 million college students and faculty with the gospel. Let us be too heroic, not permitting any barriers to stand in our way.

Conclusion
Vladimir Lenin — Russian revolutionary and certainly no friend of the Jesuits — reflected that with only a dozen cadres as talented and dedicated as the Jesuits, his Communist movement would sweep the world.

The question before us is simple. As a movement, do we have the spiritual discipline, missionary ardor, and love to change the world? This is my prayer.

Alec Hill is the president of Ƶ

News Keywords

Publishing

From the President

Discipleship

Fri, 30 Nov 2007 06:00:00 +0000 webteam@intervarsity.org 8476 at Evil and the Justice of God /news/evil-and-the-justice-of-god

About Us Menu

What We Believe

Our Purpose

Financial Info

2024-2025 Annual Report

Leadership

Ƶ and IFES History

News

Press Room

News

December 13, 2006

Evil and the Justice of God

With every earthquake and war, understanding the nature of evil and our response to it becomes more urgent.

In Evil and the Justice of God, N. T. Wright (Bishop of Durham and formerly Canon Theologian of Westminster Abbey) suggests that Jesus’ death is the culmination of God’s response to evil – on a grander scale than we have ever imagined.

Can we possibly envision a world in which we are delivered from evil? N. T. Wright would have us work toward such a future through prayer and justice in our present hour. He believes we must be completely engaged in the process of redemption, learning to imagine “a world set free.” Most of all, we must nurture our capacity to forgive, as the final victory of God’s justice rests in divine forgiveness and its incidence in our world.

This profound book is a great biblical understanding and apologetic for anyone seriously wrestling with the problem of evil. I chose the term friar rather than another term, monk for instance, because the friars were noted not only for their strong sense of mission but also for their mobility. They were willing to travel anywhere that God might call them.

What do you say about the new friars?

Through a number of stories drawn from historical and contemporary examples, I present several elements that describe the life of those who follow the path God has called them to in serving the poor. They are incarnational, pursuing Jesus’ descent into humanity; devotional, pursuing intimacy with Jesus; communal, pursuing relational wealth; missional, pursuing the kingdom of God; and marginal, living on the edges of social acceptance.

What do you hope your readers will learn and do as a result of reading your book?

I wrote this book to honor those who have made the choice to live a radical mission ideal—to honor them by telling their stories. These men and women are serving as a leavening force for the church. As church historian Adolf Harnack says, “It was always the monks who saved the Church when sinking, emancipated her when becoming enslaved to the world, defended her when assailed. These it was that kindled hearts that were growing cold, bridled refractory spirits, recovered for the Church alienated nations.” I predict that today’s emerging movement to the world’s poor, powered by the new friars, will also bring renewal to the global church of the twenty-first century. I trust that this book will play a small part in that renewal.

Scott Bessenecker is leading the Urbana 06 track, Slum Communities of the Developing World.

Mission Network News report on “The New Friars.

Christianity Today review

News Keywords

Missions

Urban Ministry

Global Trek

Publishing

Fri, 17 Nov 2006 06:00:00 +0000 webteam@intervarsity.org 8085 at Counter Culture for the Common Good /news/counter-culture-for-the-common-good

About Us Menu

What We Believe

Our Purpose

Financial Info

2024-2025 Annual Report

Leadership

Ƶ and IFES History

News

Press Room

News

November 17, 2006

Counter Culture for the Common Good

Graduating seniors were always a challenge for Nate Clarke when he was an Ƶ staff worker at Hampden-Sydney College and Longwood University in Virginia. “I always wanted to help them think through how to be intentional about their Christian faith, after losing all of the structures that have been important in sustaining their spiritual life,” he recalls. Viewers see how individuals and families work together to be a positive influence in the situation where God places them. They observe challenges and breakthroughs. And they gain insight through commentary from pastors and Christian leaders such as Tim Keller, Lauren Winner, James Meeks, Brenda Salter McNeil, and Ken Fong.

“We’re not saying this is what your life has to look like,” Nate says. “We’re inviting people to wrestle with the same things these people have wrestled with. The one thing that comes through on this DVD series is following God’s call wherever he leads you.”

Nate believes that the stories on the Intersect|Culture DVD are similar to the parables and stories found in the gospels, such as the story of the Samaritan woman. “We see in the Samaritan woman ourselves, and our need to be healed and made whole and honest about lives,” he says. “And we also see in Jesus a model of how we should interact with the people in our society who are otherwise ignored.”

Working with Christianity Today International on the Christian Vision Project was an exciting new challenge for Ƶ’s Twentyonehundred Productions. The graphic novel he wrote based on the experience of living in two cultures, American Born Chinese, has been nominated for the National Book Award in the children’s literature section. It’s the first graphic novel to win such a nomination.

Gene lives with tension in his ethnic identity, Chinese-American; his professional commitments, high school teacher and graphic artist; and his religious faith, how to live and work consistently with his beliefs. His experience in Ƶ has been a helpful foundation for balancing these tensions.

When Gene started his university education, he had aspirations of training to become a full-time cartoonist. But he submitted to his parents’ wishes that he major in something more practical and took a degree in computer science. He now teaches high school and writes graphic novels in the evening.

While at Berkeley, Gene was an active member of the Ƶ chapter. He led Bible studies and learned how to be a servant leader. After graduation, he spent the summer at Ƶ’s Los Angeles Urban Project learning how much God values artists. The next year he was on staff with Ƶ as a campus intern. At the end of that year, he and the other interns spent a weekend in prayer to discern whether they should continue on staff. At the end of that weekend, Gene made two decisions: not to continue on Ƶ staff and to publish a graphic novel, even if he had to pay for it himself.

But, wonderfully, Gene received a writing grant and so did not have to pay to publish the first issue of Gordon Yamamoto and the King of the Geeks. Over the next several years, he wrote two more issues of this graphic novel and completed American Born Chinese. Based on a personal conviction that “God, a personal being larger than me, wants me to be who I am,” Gene wrote this multi-layered story of self-acceptance. A friend of his submitted this book to a prominent graphic novel publisher who soon offered Gene a contract. The book has garnered very good reviews.

When Gene was notified that his book had been nominated for the National Book Award, he could not claim that it was a dream come true, because he had never even dreamed that anything like that would happen to him. As he has fielded interview requests and attended book signings, Gene is grateful for the affirmation of his artistic work that the nomination has given him. The new imprints are part of a strategic branding plan that represents InterVaristy Press’ commitment to continue to publish a breadth of thoughtful books as well as create room for ambitious company growth initiatives and publishing program clarity.

The three imprints are IVP Books, IVP Connect and IVP Academic. A celebration party will help launch the imprints in the new Ƶ Press booth at Advance 2006 in Nashville on January 24.

Over the decades, Ƶ Press has built up its academic, Bible study and trade books. In fact, Ƶ Press publishes about 90 books a year, representing approximately 35 academic and reference works, 20 Bible study and curriculum products and 35 general books. Jeff Crosby, director of sales and marketing, says the breadth of Ƶ Press’ publishing initiatives and changes in the marketplace led to the new brands and imprint strategy.

Crosby also believes, Ƶ Press is held as a highly reputable publishing house and has been throughout its history, but the breadth and volume of what we publish, from high level academic works to basic introductory works, now calls for more definition. We believe the three imprints will allow us to leverage the strengths of each of these publishing focuses in ways that help us realize the ambitious growth plans we have established.

Andy LePeau, editorial director of Ƶ Press, says, “The brand strategy is an opportunity for us to affirm who we are as a publisher. We are merely focusing on what we do best, and hope that authors, bookstore owners and readers will see that even more clearly now.”

The IVP Books imprint carries a tagline of “Read. Think. Live.” The books in this line seek to be deeply biblical and profoundly practical. The books will also keep Ƶ Press’ thoughtful book heritage. Book topics include apologetics, evangelism, discipleship, multi-ethnicity, family, church and mission and will expand its inclusion of new topics of interest such as Islam, love and sex, ethics and more. Beginning in 2006, the IVP Books line will contain sub-imprints to highlight books on topics that will be strong growth areas.

One of the new subimprints is Formatio, which focuses on spiritual formation books. The new books to launch in this line will appear at Advance 2006 such as The Deeper Journey by M. Robert Mulholland Jr., Resting Place by Jane Rubietta and Sacred Rythms by Ruth Haley Barton.

The second sub-imprint ready to be announced is Veritas Forum Books, a series of books that will reflect the organizational partnership between IVP and The Veritas Forum, an organization that seeks to provide a place on campus where college students can discuss the tough questions of life and Christian faith. In 1992 the first Veritas Forum was held at Harvard University, organized by Kelly Monroe Kullberg, editor of Finding God at Harvard. A follow-up release, Finding God Beyond Harvard, will be published in fall 2006 with Ƶ Press as the first book in the Veritas sub-imprint.

The second new line is IVP Connect, with a tagline “Exploring Faith. Shaping Lives.” This new imprint seeks to include resources that offer discovery experiences for groups and individuals. The LifeGuide bible study series that has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide will continue to be the flagship series for this line. However, this line will also include other bible study and small group resources. At Advance 2006, Bill Donahue, author of In the Company of Jesus will also be sharing one of his new bible studies, Authentic Leader in the Jesus 101 series. Ƶ Press is currently expanding this imprint to include multimedia curriculum, such as the Emerging Culture: An Interactive Curriculum, edited by Jimmy Long, which was awarded the ECPA Gold Medallion in 2005 for best Christian education resource.

The third line is IVP Academic, whose tagline is “Evangelically Rooted. Critically Engaged.” The mission of IVP Academic is to provide the global university with the very best of evangelical scholarship through books that start, shape, synthesize and summarize academic dialog. Over the past fifteen years IVP has been expanding its horizons in academic and reference book publishing. These texts are an ever-increasing variety of academic disciplines including New Testament and Old Testament studies, theology, ethics, philosophy, history, science, psychology and more. IVP Academic will continue to produce reference works that include the award winning “Black” Dictionary series on the Old and New Testaments and the landmark Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture. IVP Academic is and will be evangelical in heritage, biblical in allegiance, classical in orthodoxy and ecumenical in spirit. The announcement of the formation of this line occurred at several academic conferences this fall. One of the bestselling books at these shows was the new Dictionary of the Old Testament: Historical Books edited by Bill T. Arnold and H.G. M. Williamson.

The three imprints, IVP Books, IVP Connect and IVP Academic will be under the corporate identity of Ƶ Press and help the company serve those in the university, the church and the world. Bob Fryling, Publisher of Ƶ Press says, The branding is already proven to be a success as authors, sales reps and buyers who have been privy to our new imprint strategy, have expressed great enthusiasm for this visually attractive way to communicate both the unity of the quality and the breadth of diversity of books published by Ƶ Press. We fully expect there will be a much greater industry awareness and interest in all that IVP publishes that will also result in increased sales. As a “leading publisher of thoughtful Christian books” we want all book buyers to be better able to effectively choose what is most valuable to them from IVP. Making this connection easier for them is success for us.

News Keywords

Publishing

Press Release

Mon, 02 Jan 2006 06:00:00 +0000 webteam@intervarsity.org 8227 at
