Mary鈥檚 song in Luke 1, traditionally called the 鈥淢agnificat,鈥 is, for me, one of the most astonishing and challenging passages in the Bible.

In this month of Advent, our thoughts usually turn to Jesus and Mary. Yet lately I鈥檝e found that I鈥檓 more drawn to Elizabeth. Perhaps it鈥檚 because I鈥檓 older. Or maybe it鈥檚 because I know what it鈥檚 like to yearn for something and then to see days, months, years pass without having that yearning fulfilled.

I have received direct word from God about his will for your life. You can put away the college major guidebooks, career counseling sessions, and eharmony profiles. I know what he wants from you. Ready? Joy, prayer, and thankfulness. 鈥淥h, come on! That鈥檚 not his will.
I don鈥檛 think I鈥檓 the only young Christian who can get bummed out by the word 鈥渟anctification.鈥 Once I get over how smart I sound saying a word that could get me at least 22 points in Scrabble...
